About Subaru

Subaru is the automotive brand of Japanese conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries and the largest producer of four-wheel vehicles in the world. Subaru is considered the pioneer of all-wheel technology and brought the first all-wheel car on the market in 1972. Since then, Subaru has sold more than 13.5 million vehicles worldwide. The Japanese are known for their reliable and robust vehicles. Particular importance to the company is its in-house development of new models and technologies.

In the World Rally Championship Subaru was one of the top teams and took the world champion title six times. Three world titles collected by the team from 1995 to 1997; Colin McRae (1995), Richard Burns (2001), and Petter Solberg (2003) were drivers champion on Subaru before the brand withdrew from the World Championship in 2008.

Until recently, the way was also the principle that every Subaru had four-wheel drive. Only the cooperation with Toyota breaks with this rule. The sports car Subaru BRZ (aka Toyota 86) drives only the rear wheels. However, it also has as the typical Subaru element: the boxer engine. The Subaru technicians appreciate the balanced vibration behavior and the low center of gravity so much that they also created the first diesel boxer in the world. Today the models range from the minivan Trezia to the Impreza, Legacy, and Forester to the new SUV Subaru SV. Not to forget the 300 hp old rally car WRX STI.

The History of the Subaru Emblem

Company logos do not arise overnight. Logos have a history. The story of the Subaru star goes back to the year 1917. On December 10th of that year, Chikohai Nakajima founded a laboratory for aircraft in Ota. From this, he developed the Nakajima Aircraft Co. Ltd., which supplied engines and combat aircraft to Japan's Air Force. In WW2 these machines were known for their good maneuverability and and long reach. But this didn't help to change the outcome of this war.

General Douglas McArthur, commander of the victorious allied forces, ordered the dissolution of the Japanese giant financial groups. Those include the Nakajima Aircraft Co., which manufactures thereafter under the new name Fuji Sangyo producing civilian products. On the orders of the American military, Fiji Sangyo was split up into twelve companies in 1950. In 1953 Fuji got permission to unite the six small companies under one roof again:

On July 15, Fuji Heavy Industry was founded. Four years later the first Subaru ran off the production lines. The name "SUBARU" is a monument of association, and six stars are the symbol: From six companies Fuji Heavy industry has emerged. The constellation of the Pleiades consists of six stars that are visible to the naked eye. And Subaru means "unite". Here Greek mythology comes into play. The Pleiades are the daughters of Atlas and the Pleione. They are called Alcylone, Celaens, Electra, Maia, Asterope, and Taygeta. The girls are so beautiful, that the hunter Orion stalks them for years until Zeus redeems them from their shape and they can shine as a star from the sky.

Fuji Heavy industry has trademarked the names of all the Pleiades as a trademark in Japan, and the first Subaru, the 360 Sedan, received 1958 the name "Maia". Since then oval with six stars decorates all Subarus.
